An impromptu closing day at Fair Grounds will be headlined by the G2 $1,000,000 Louisiana Derby on Saturday, March 21, when a full field of 3YO Kentucky Derby hopefuls race to the finish in the 1 3/16 miles headliner.

Risen Star runners return seeking top prize in the Big Easy

Looking for the winner in Saturday's featured $1,000,000 Louisiana Derby seems an easy find given that several of the horses last competed against each other in one of two split divisions of the recently run Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds. But only one of the two winners will be making his way back to the track on Saturday

Mr. Monomoy, the winner of the toughest of the two divisions has been sidelined by injury. And that leaves runner-up Enforceable to carry the torch from the 'Risen Star 1' for Oxley Stables and trainer Mark Casse. The late closing style of this son of Tapit, combined with the added distance, will give him a chance to take home the honors representing the division.

Modernist will lead the way for the horses exiting 'Risen Star 2' as the winner. But if he's going to win on Saturday he'll have his work cut out for him breaking widest of all from post position 14.

1Major FedFoley8-1
Thus far, he's been lightly raced. Rosario called in to bring star power after losing Leparoux to the favorite. That was a good effort in the Risen Star against graded stakes company off a maiden victory. Will be able to save all the ground but will likely get stuck down inside for most.
2Mailman MoneyCalhoun15-1
Gets a better starting spot for this one after trying to be contentious from the 10 hole in the Risen Star behind Modernist. On paper he looks good but he won't deliver today.
3Wells BayouCox8-1
Speedy runner draws well for top connections and will make the most of his inside post and speed to set the pace today. Adds a furlong to his last out Southwest effort when runner up. Won't have it easy on the frontend as Modernist will need to clear and contend. Sloppy track could help his cause but otherwise see him as a board finisher.
At this point, let's not even consider the Kentucky Derby implications for this race. Because as we've seen with Mr. Monomoy who sailed to the top of the leaderboard with 50 points for his Risen Star win, only to be injured, sidelined, and removed from future wager consideration. But the new date of September 5 may allow a renewed interest in horses who veered off the trail. With that said, Velazquez gets the call here for Asmussen. New York bred son of Tapit has been the odds on choice in all four starts - winning one. Exits key race. But if you like him, you have to like Shake Some Action.
5Social AfleetStewart50-1
Louisiana bred winner of two state bred starts. Did face Sharecropper and Portos at long odds in Kentucky late last year. Connections seem to have gotten excited by Sharecropper's last out performance. But this one is out of reach and connections are out of touch.
6Shake Some ActionCox15-1
Castellano was aboard in last start and got the follow up win to his maiden turf triumph. But Castellano stays in Florida today, so it's back to Hernandez who won the turf race. Probably not the better of Cox's entries in here, but must respect for a piece and a possible VICTORY.
Local connections are taking a shot and a big step up in class here off a good 4th place try in OC ranks. The winner of that one is just to his inside in here for top connections so believing that these two and Chestertown are exiting a key race. Still tough to go against graded stakes company winners.
8Royal ActEurton10-1
Son of American Pharoah makes the trip off a turf victory at Del Mar in first ever outing and a second place finish in the Robert B. Lewis, when wearing blinkers, behind Baffert's Thousand Words who returned in defeat in the San Felipe last time. Interesting but probably needs the stretchout as he adds an 1/8 to his longest.
Pletcher has sent two to Fair Grounds this meet without a placing. Ortiz, Jr. was going to get the call - except he's self-quarantining due to the Wuhan virus. Lost to Enforceable at Saratoga.
Lecomte winner two back over Mr. Monomoy who turned the tables in the Risen Star and would be the favorite if not for an injury that has sidelined him for 60 days. Rain in the forecast in New Orleans and his performance was lacking in three off-track efforts. Added distance should help. CAUTION
11Ny TrafficJoseph15-1
Castellano got the call in the Risen Star when he chased Modernist before giving up at the top of the long Fair Grounds stretch. Can't see how he can improve with added distance.
12Lynn's MapCasse30-1
Handicapper has given up on this guy. But Gaffalione is back aboard since maiden score in second outing. Has a win over the track against Mr. Monomoy who won the tougher half of the split division Risen Star - but he's not running today. Tried to take back in last and will have to do the same here. LONGSHOT
13Silver StateAsmussen6-1
Twice tried the Fair Grounds oval vs. Enforceable et, al., but couldn't land atop this year's class, locally. Well bred and highly touted since 9+ maiden voyage victory at Churchill. Will need to come from well off the pace.
Goes from the rail twice to the parking lot for this one. Should have no problem clearing them and like that he's had the same rider in all four lifetime starts. Adds 1/16th miles and could be Mott's player this year. CHANCE.
